Youth Unemployment in Somerset (Economy & Jobs)

Data from the Office for National Statistics Annual Population Survey estimates that in June 2010 15% of 16 to 24 year olds were unemployed in Somerset. This is below the national and regional average of 20% and 18% respectively.

The figure below shows that a higher percentage of 16 to 19 year olds are unemployed compared to 20 to 24 year olds. This is particularly evident in Somerset where 27% of 16 to 19 year olds are unemployed compared to 9% of 20 to 24 year olds.

Although the JSA claimant rate is below the national average, the number of 16 to 24 year olds claiming JSA in Somerset has doubled since the start of the economic downturn from 1,005 in July 2008 to 2,135 in January 2011.
