The Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA) is required under the 2007 Local Government and Public Involvement in Health Bill and is also enshrined in the current Health and Social Care Bill and Public Health White Paper ‘Healthy Lives, Healthy People’. Our JSNA is built on strong partnership working and is the means by which Somerset County Council and NHS Somerset will describe the future health, care and wellbeing needs of the local population and the strategic direction to meet those needs.

The 2011 Somerset JSNA (Downloadable below) comprises a number of elements, with a specific focus on housing, health and wellbeing in the older population and health inequalities. There is also: the Priority Area Report which identifies local areas with particular wellbeing needs; a collection of local health profile data tables; a data pack for each of the GP groups (federations) who will be responsible for commissioning healthcare; and a document reviewing the many other sources which have contributed to the JSNA.

It is underpinned by a comprehensive set of data, further supported by a range of strategic reports and needs assessments carried out by partner organisations. Data can be accessed via INFORM Somerset, in which indicators are constantly being added and updated. Most of the supporting documents, along with previous JSNAs, can also be accessed below.

Information in the JSNA will be refreshed on an ongoing basis. A public summary will be widely distributed across the county, including libraries and GP surgeries.

We welcome your feedback on the 2011 Somerset JSNA and this webpage. Please complete our short questionnaire, the results of which will help inform how we produce future JSNAs.
